I’m in the process of organizing my first in-person mediumship event in almost three years, and let’s just say… I’m rusty.
I feel as if I’m getting to know an old friend all over again. It’s taking some obligatory small talk and awkward catch-up before the easy flow and witty repartee can begin.
I love re-connecting you with your loved ones in spirit. And my absolute favourite experience is being live and in the room with you. I love it so much that I taught myself how to do many things that I was not good at and did not enjoy, just for the pleasure of working with you.
After much time, tears, and repetition, those difficult tasks like accounting, learning Facebook ads, and mastering email triggers became easier as they settled into their place in the process.
Needless to say, sitting at home for two years did nothing to preserve those skills. I stared at a screen while eating my way out of every item of clothing I owned - even my stretchy pants. These circumstances caused some of my live event skills to atrophy, and I’m having to reacquaint myself with tasks that were second nature to me a few short years ago.
If you have ever taken a break from working out, you will feel my pain. How is it fair that you work out for ten years solid, and if you don’t work out for, say, three months, it’s as if those ten years of work never happened?
Although I am a little frustrated that this process feels like I have never planned a mediumship event before in my life, despite the fact that I did so every week for a decade, I have a philosophy for moving back into confidence and competence, and it’s this:
If you are incredibly consistent, you will become consistently incredible.
Some realities only survive with consistent maintenance, working out is one of them, and, apparently, organizing mediumship events is another.
For me, being incredibly consistent has always been difficult. I am, to put it bluntly, away with the fairies. I live in a world of interconnected narrative, paradoxical philosophies, madcap ideas, awe, wonder, shiny things, and twinkly lights.
I struggled with consistency because I believed that it was the antithesis of creativity and freedom. I also believed that consistency meant filling my days with tasks I did not want to do, and that each day had to look the same, and must be spent in unrelenting gargantuan effort.
I now realize that doing the right things consistently is not the antithesis of freedom, but the key to it. I know that consistency is easy for me when I permit myself to do tasks I love, and to do them my own way (like writing articles for you and organizing mediumship events). And I see that consistency is achievable with a ‘little and often’ approach, rather than a gargantuan effort each time.
Each day, I move myself just 1% further than the day before, on the things that matter most to me. This is how I will recover my competence and confidence with planning and hosting my Spirit Sessions events.
Has covid made you a little rusty at doing life and being you?
Maybe you’ve stopped sitting in the power, or giving readings; or perhaps isolation has caused a backslide in your healing from grief. If so, you might consider a small amount of consistent action toward something that feels good to you, as a way to get momentum going again.
When spirit guided me to get back in the room with people, the first thing I did was view venues because this is one of my favourite things to do (Spirit Sessions is taking place in Edinburgh, Scotland on Thursday 20th January and it’s free to attend. Register here to join us!). I love adventures and viewing beautiful spaces, so I simply started there. I began with what felt good, and did the same the day after, and the day after that. And lo! consistency emerged!
Start with what feels good. Let it be small. A delicious truffle of time. Walk to the gym but don’t pressure yourself to go in. Make one phone call. Go to one meeting. Take one meaningful step in the direction of your desires, your values, or your healing. And then just do the same tomorrow.
If you are incredibly consistent, you will become consistently incredible.
Now, I’d love to hear from you! Where in your life would you like to recover confidence and competence?
