A few weeks ago, I was a guest on Jim Harold’s The Paranormal Podcast.
During our interview, Jim asked whether I think anyone can do mediumship, or whether, as the Maybelline ad proposes - maybe she’s born with it.
I compare learning mediumship to learning to play the piano.
Most people, who take the time to learn, can get a tune out of a piano.
Very few who tinkle the ivories will go on to be concert pianists, but almost everyone who tries to play the piano will experience some benefit in their lives from doing so.
The same can be said for mediumship.
Whenever we learn a new skill, we enjoy the primary benefit of learning the skill itself, and the opportunities that arise as a result.
But we also receive many secondary benefits simply from trying. Benefits like:
Learning how to devote yourself to something and staying the course
Knowing yourself - your strengths and limitations - better
The satisfaction of improvement and moving past important milestones
The rush of repeatedly failing and then suddenly having a breakthrough
Discovering what your values and priorities are
Making new friends and meeting like-minded people who share your passion
Feeling accomplished and proud of yourself
Feeling motivated (and keeping going even when you don’t!)
Healing self-doubt
Expanding your capabilities
Connecting with a deeper purpose and higher power
Experiencing joy.
Each of these benefits stand apart from, and are in addition to, your talent for the task itself.
Arguably then, if you are passionate about the piano, there are many good reasons to learn to play, regardless of your natural talent. Likewise, there are many good reasons to try mediumship regardless of your talent.
You may find that you can receive names, memories, and significant evidence right out the gate, meeting a latent part of yourself that was waiting to shine - what joy!
But even if you’re not a protégé, or you don’t experience ‘beginner’s luck’, it is still worth exploring mediumship.
You may simply find peace within yourself.
A rekindling of love and closeness with those you have lost.
A new perception that we are each connected, and the quiet certainty that comes from that.
You may find tenderness for your grief …
Or new reasons to cherish your existence.
These are compelling reasons to try mediumship if you feel called to do so, that have nothing to do with whether or not you can ‘do’ it!
So, how to begin exploring mediumship?
Find a good community and / or development circle. Mediumship is meaningless without other people.
Read reputable books on the subject.
Take beginner / taster courses.
Meditate. Specifically, try my Sitting in the Power meditation. Use it to get familiar with the feeling of altering your consciousness and developing trust with spirit.
A 2011 study by Professor Chris Roe and Dr Elizabeth Roxburgh found that people with mediumistic abilities are higher in trait openness on the Big 5 Personality Traits test, so if you are high in this trait, there is a good chance that, in addition to the benefits listed above, you’ll have a talent for mediumship!
Now, I’d love to hear from you.
