Academic studies and research on the effects of childhood encouragement, or lack thereof, are in their infancy.
Anecdotally, I know that if you feel able to draw from an internal well of encouragement, you are likely to achieve what you set out to do, and you are likely to be able to repeat that process in a variety of domains, resulting in a life you’re happy with overall.
If, on the other hand, you feel that you are drowning in all the reasons to be discouraged, you are much more likely to abandon meaningful goals, and just coast through life on auto-pilot, all the while feeling unsatisfied.
Most of us did not receive all the encouragement we could have benefitted from in childhood. Instead, we were punished too harshly and too frequently, and we were encouraged and praised for doing what our parents valued, and what made their lives easier, rather than being celebrated for our efforts, or our unique personalities, skills and talents. This imbalance resulted in adults who cannot see their gifts clearly; who cannot accurately assess the value of their contribution to the world; and who lack confidence in themselves and their ability to succeed.
